WOMEN'S BASKETBALL AND SWIMMING - LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY
On Sunday, September 17, 2006, the Iona College women’s basketball team and the men’s and women’s swimming teams volunteered at a triathlon to raise money to assist in finding cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. The three teams were able to provide over 60 volunteers that kept the athletes on track and safe through the swimming and cycling courses.
Working with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and TEAM IN TRAINING, Iona College athletes were able to assist 230 athletes in raising over $750,000. The student-athletes worked in pairs as lifeguards on the swim course and crossing guards to stop traffic on the cycling course.
"Our team was able to work together and bond all while helping an amazing cause,” said head swimming and diving coach Nick Cavataro.
“The women’s basketball team was happy to volunteer and contribute to such a great cause, and we hope to do it again in the coming years,” said administrative assistant Melissa Yeagley.
