THANKSGIVING FOOD BASKETS FOR THE NEEDY
On Monday, November 20, 2006, the Iona College Athletic Department participated in the college’s annual Thanksgiving Drive. Varsity teams were asked to purchase and assemble “baskets” in order to spread the joy of Thanksgiving to economically disadvantaged families. The response was positively overwhelming! The Gaels presented a total of twenty-two baskets at the Blessing Ceremony in the La Penta Student Union. Baskets were filled to the brim with traditional Thanksgiving goodies, including sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and apple cider!
Sponsored by Campus Ministries, the Blessing Ceremony included the offering of prayers, reflections, and songs of Catholic tradition. Among those in attendance was Jamie Fogarty, Senior Associate Athletic Director. Addressing a crowd composed of representatives from various campus clubs and organizations, Fogarty noted how proud she was of Iona College student-athletes for responding so generously to the donation drive and showing such a strong commitment to helping the underprivileged.
Following the service, the baskets were distributed to two area food distribution locations, the Abraham House (Bronx, NY) and the Hope Community Services Center (New Rochelle, NY).
The Thanksgiving Drive was, without question, a huge success! The provisions far exceeded the expectations of project organizers! Many thanks to all involved!
