On April 24, 2006, Iona College celebrated National Student-Athlete Day in recognition of excellence in the classroom, on the field of play, and in the community.

<br /><br />National Student-Athlete Day was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports and the Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sport in Society, with partnership from the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations. NCAA involvement began in 1994.
<br /><br />
<br /><br />During this year’s event awards were presented for Male and Female Strength and Conditioning Student-Athlete of the Year, Academic Student-Athlete of the Year, and Gael of the Year in each sport. Those selected as a Gael of the Year were honored for embodying the mission of the day, the NCAA, and Iona Athletics. Below are pictures of the event and the award winners. For the Gaels of the year award standing left to right is Audrey Emaus of Women’s Swimming and Diving, Martina Weber of Women’s Basketball, Marvin McCullough of Men’s Basketball, Drew Finneran of Men’s Swimming and Diving, Heather Bourgault of Women’s Cross Country/Track, Frank Corrigan of Men’s Cross Country/Track, Anne Fithian of Lacrosse, Eric Nowakowski of Men’s Water Polo, Megan Teixeira of Women’s Soccer, Terence Kehayas of Football, Melissa McGregor of Women’s Water Polo, Mikaela Hogg of Volleyball, Colleen Ryan of Women’s Rowing, Paul Selvaggio of Golf, and Ryan Kelly of Men’s Rowing. Not pictured are Tim Wheeler of Baseball, Stacy Moyer of Softball, and Marcos Monteagudo of Men’s Soccer.

<br /><br />This annual event allows the Iona athletic department and coaching staff to honor the student-athletes for all that they have accomplished in the year.
