Thomas Scifres was named head coach of the Iona men's and women's rowing programs on Aug. 28, 2007. Scifres holds an extensive rowing background as a coach and competitor.
Priot to Iona, Scifres served as the men's team Head Coach and Boathouse Director at the University of Rhode Island. During the 2006-07 season, he implemented a new recruiting system and promoted a team environment with emphasis on talent identification and retention. Under his lead, Rhode Island surpassed its all-time fund raising record by 33% and saw vast improvements in its Varsity Eight boat.
Scifres has also held several other coaching positions including a stint as Interim Head Coach/Juniors & Masters Coach for Northampton Youth & Community Rowing Inc. from 2004-2006. He was a Volunteer Assistant Coach at Smith College during the same stretch. His instructional listings date back to 2003, when he coached the boy's varsity squad at Robinson High School in Fairfax, VA.
While studying at Bowdoin, Scifres served as rowing team captain, helping lead his crew to several victories at the Dad Vail Regatta and New England Championships. He was a quarter-finalist for the Brittania Cup, Stewards Selected Crew at the Henley Royal Regatta.
Scifres earned a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from Bowdoin College and a Master's degree in Exercise and Sports Studies from Smith College in 2006.
