 Nicholas Cruz

Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Kelly Shaver has announced that Nicholas Cruz will be joining the Iona College staff as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for the 2016-17 season.

Cruz joins the Gaels after being most recently with Weidman Athletics in Long Island, NY.  There he operated as the Team Operations Coordinator, ensuring that the management and organization of UFC fight Chris Weidman's personal and professional schedule were taken care of.  Among those duties including locating training facilities, tending to dietary needs, and implanting strength and conditioning and corrective/rehabilitative exercises when traveling.

He operated as the first point of contact from people both inside and outside the world of MMA in addition to working along the Paradigm sports management team, Reebok, and the UFC.

From 2014-16, Cruz was Strength & Conditioning Graduate Assistant at LIU Brooklyn.  There he designed and implemented the strength and conditioning program for its men's basketball program, as well as women's soccer.  He experience hands on work with ordering and organizing of equipment, as well as creating individualized corrective exercise programs in conjunction with Sports Medicine.

Having graduated from LIU Brooklyn with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Science in 2014, and a masters in Exercise Science in 2016, Cruz was submerged in their training program.  He served as a Strength and Conditioning trainer from 2010 to 2014, as well as being a Fitness Consultant and the LIU Wellness and Recreation Center from 2012-16.

This is the second stint at Iona College for Cruz; from the fall of 2011 to 2012, and in the summer of 2014, he worked here in New Rochelle, NY as a Strength and Conditioning Intern.  He also has collegiate experience at St. Francis College and Fordham University.
