THANKSGIVING BASKETS FOR THE NEEDY
On Monday, November 19, 2007, the Iona College Athletic Department participated in the college’s annual Thanksgiving Drive. Members of Iona’s 22 Division I athletic teams were asked to purchase and assemble “baskets” to give to economically disadvantaged families to try and spread the joy that the Thanksgiving season brings. The Gaels presented a total of twenty-two baskets at the Blessing Ceremony held in the La Penta Student Union. The baskets were beautifully packaged and filled with traditional foods of Thanksgiving, including sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and apple cider!
Sponsored by Campus Ministries, the Blessing Ceremony included the offering of prayers, reflections, and songs of Catholic tradition. Senior Associate Athletic Director Jamie Fogarty spearheaded the Thanksgiving Drive and was present at the Ceremony. Fogarty congratulated the student-athletes for their hard work in their respective seasons on the fields of play and how they are able to translate that passion and drive to helping those less fortunate in this season of giving, family, and celebration.
The baskets were distributed to two area food banks, the Abraham House (Bronx, NY) and the Hope Community Services Center (New Rochelle, NY). The Thanksgiving Drive was once again a huge success. With both project organizers and student-athletes alike thrilled with the overall outcome of their efforts, it was truly something special to be involved in.
