NEW YORK, NY - The Iona College women's indoor track and field and field team dominated the distance events at the 2012 MAAC Championships at the Armory Track and Field Center. Senior Heidi Gregson and junior Marion Joly-Testault set MAAC records at the event to pace the Gaels.
Gregson finished first in the mile run, running a MAAC Championship record 4:48.09. She topped former Iona standout Michelle Gallagher's meet record of 4:55.18, set in 2005. Sophomore Kirsten Stewart also came in under Gallagher's time with a 4:52.05. Sophomore Katie Niblock was third overall with a time of 4:56.43. Senior Teegan Schoch was eighth overall while junior Erin Brady finished 13th in the event.
Joly-Testault broke former Gael performer Emmily Chelanga's eight-year old MAAC Championship mark of 16:47.43 in the 5,000-meter run. She was three and a half seconds faster than Chelanga at 16:44.94. Graduate Hollie Rowland was second overall, also finishing under Chelanga's time with her 16:45.27. Freshman Lauren Calvino was third overall, nearly 50 seconds behind her teammates with a 17:41.70. Junior Chelsea Hanson finished eighth while sophomore Courtney Veilleux was 12th overall.
Iona also finished with the top four performers in the 3,000-meter event. Freshman Regina Neumeyer continued a successful rookie campaign with her MAAC Championship time of 9:52.84. Joly-Testault was runner up, exactly three seconds behind her teammate (9:55.84). Rowland was third overall in 9:58.76 while Calvino earned fourth place points in 10:22.89. Hanson was the fourth performer to run the double, finishing seventh (10:29.29).
The Maroon & Gold dominated the distance medley relay event, topping Loyola by more than 10 seconds. Niblock, Reilly Sullivan, Luci McLoughlin and Stewart combined for a time of 12:07.46 for the Gold medal.
Also individually medaling for the Gaels was McLoughlin. She finished third overall in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:16.64. She was less than a second behind Loyola's Jacqueline D'Antonio for second and four seconds behind Saint Peter's Shona Potrzuski for first.
The Gaels finished third overall behind repeat champion Saint Peter's and second place Manhattan with 100 points.
Nine student-athletes were named MAAC All-Academic for their performance in the classroom. Gregson, Hanson, Joly-Testault, Niblock, Schoch and Veilleux joined sophomores Shannon Christie and Tara Jameson and senior Jenny Kurz on the list.
