Mike Ritz is currently a junior journalism major at Iona College. He is from Yorktown, New York and is a sports writer for the school newspaper, The Ionian. Mike has been the manager for the Iona women's basketball team since his freshman year. A lover of sports, he played four years of basketball in high school as well as four years of golf. Mike comes from an Iona family, both of his parents, Ron and Michelle, graduated from Iona as well as his sister, Jen, who played basketball for the Gaels for four years and graduated in 2008. Mike loves to be a part of the Iona family and aspires to be a successful sports writer when he graduates.
NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women’s basketball team ended their regular season on a high note as they honored their seniors and defeated Saint Peter’s 74-49 at the Hynes Center Sunday afternoon.
As for the game, both teams were evenly matched at the start as a three-pointer by Bacic tied the game up at 16 with 8:56 remaining in the half. A jumper by Kaydine Bent gave the Peahens a 21-20 lead with 7:41 left. But that would be their last lead of the contest as the Gaels ended the half on a 14-3 run, capped by a jumper by freshman guard Damika Martinez with two seconds remaining to give Iona a 34-24 lead at half.
With the Gaels up 39-29 with 16:51 left, the Peahens went on a 13-4 run as six different scorers cut the lead to just one, 43-42, with 12:18 remaining in the game.
From there, the Gaels took back control of the game with a 15-3 run of their own, with six points from freshman guard Aleesha Powell, to give Iona a 58-45 lead with 7:12 to go.
Iona ended the game on a 16-0 run capped by two free throws from Schoof, as the Gaels improve to 8-10 in conference.
Ford led all scorers with 23 points and added 14 rebounds, while Martinez had 15 points. The Gaels had 11 different scorers in the contest.
Iona clinched the seventh seed in the next week’s MAAC championships. They will look to advance to the second round on Thursday when they take on tenth seeded Rider at 12pm in Springfield, Massachusetts.
