EDISON, NJ - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has released the 2012-13 men’s and women’s swimming and diving pre-season poll with the Iona women fourth and the men sixth, as announced by the conference office.
Entering his 33rd season at the helm, Iona head coach Nick Cavataro is set to push his squads to the limit in search of a MAAC Championship. On the women’s side, senior Theresa Harvey returns after swimming at the ECAC Championships last season in the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle events. Classmate Chris Yacobacci is the top men’s returner and also qualified for ECAC’s last season after winning a pair of gold’s at MAAC Championships.
In the poll represented and voted on by all eleven head coaches, including new men’s associate member Bryant University, Rider was selected as the top team on the men’s side and Marist was chosen to represent the women.
Marist, Canisius, Loyola and Bryant were selected ahead of Iona on the men’s side, respectively, with Saint Peter’s, Fairfield, Niagara and Manhattan rounding out the remaining slots in the poll.
In the women’s bracket, Rider and Loyola were picked second and third, respectively. Behind Iona sits Canisius, Siena, Fairfield, Niagara, Saint Peter’s and Manhattan.
The Gaels will get the season started the weekend of October 19-20 at the NE Catholic Invite, hosted by Boston College.
