Iona MBB Scorches St. Bonaventure 93-74

OLEAN, NY - The Iona College men's basketball team continued its hot shooting ways in a 93-74 win at St. Bonaventure in non-conference action at the Reilly Center. The Gaels (7-6) had five players score 10 or more points and reached the 90 point mark for the third straight game.

Junior Sean Armand scored 15 of his game-high 27 points in the second half all on three-point field goals. He was 7-for-14 from beyond the arc for the game and added five rebounds and five assists. 

Senior Lamont Jones added 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. He was 6-of-6 from the line and hit three trifectas. Jones added five assists and four boards.

Senior Taaj Ridley and sophomore David Laury both posted 13 points and eight rebounds in the win. Ridley shot 5-of-8 from the field and had a career-high four assists in the win. Freshman A.J. English came off the bench and scored all 11 of his points in the second half.

St. Bonaventure knotted the score at 15-15 with 12:23 to play in the first half with a three-pointer by Eric Mosley. Iona scored seven straight points over the next 2:57 and took the lead for good. The Gaels led by as many as 14 points in the frame, taking a 36-22 advantage on a breakaway dunk by sophomore Tavon Sledge with 3:25 to play. The Bonnies' Demitrius Conger drained a three-pointer with 48 ticks left to make the halftime margin 40-31 in favor of the Maroon & Gold.

Bonaventure came out firing in the second half, scoring 11 of the first 13 points to cut the deficit to just two points. Marquise Simmons' jumper in the lane made the score 42-40 at the 17:09 mark. Armand ended the run with his first of five second half trifectas on the next possession. Leading by three at 16:35, Iona scored seven straight to regain a double-digit advantage. Ridley's baseline jumper put the Gaels ahead 52-43 with 13:23 to play. The Gaels run extended to 17-5 as Armand's three-ball with 11:45 to go gave the Maroon & Gold a 15 point advantage. Iona led by 20 points on two occasions. Ridley's jumper made the score 80-60 with 6:16 left and two free throws by the senior put the score at 86-66.

The Gaels outshot the Bonnies 52.5% - 38.6% in the game. Iona shot 13-for-27 from beyond the arc and dished out 21 assists. Bonaventure used a late rebounding flurry to edge the Gaels 38-37 on the boards.

Conger posted a team-best 26 points and eight rebounds for the home team. Charlon Kloof had seven points and eight assists before fouling out.

It was the first loss of the season for the Bonnies on their home floor. Entering the contest Bona had won 15-of-16 and 21-of-its-last-23 at the Reilly Center.

The Gaels complete the 2012 portion of their schedule with a 7-6 advantage. Iona begins the heart of its MAAC schedule Friday (Jan. 4), completing a three-game road trip at Siena. The Maroon & Gold then hosts Manhattan Sunday (Jan. 6) at the Hynes Center.
