NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College baseball head coach Pat Carey has announced the team captains for the upcoming 2013 campaign. Leading the Gaels this season will be the quartet of senior RHP Thomas Kriss, senior SS Matthew Kriss, junior LHP Eddie Macaluso and junior OF Joe Torres.
A season ago, T. Kriss appeared in 20 games on the mound for the Gaels, pitching to a 1.64 earned run average while serving as the team's closer. In 22 innings of work, the righty allowed just four earned runs while striking out 22 batters and walking just nine and picking up seven saves.
M. Kriss batted .304 in 2012, to go along 55 hits, including 13 doubles and drove in 25 runs. In 23 conference games, Kriss batted .317 with eight runs batted in.
Macaluso started 14 games for Iona last season, finishing with a record of 4-7 and a team high 42 strikeouts in 2012, including 33 in conference games.
Torres had 49 hits a season ago, including 14 doubles and drove in 18 runs for the Gaels. He recorded 158 putouts in centerfield and did not commit a single error last season. In conference play, Torres scored collected 21 hits and scored 15 runs.
Iona opens the 2013 season Saturday, Feb. 16 with a three game series with Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, MD.
