EDISON, NJ - Iona College men’s basketball sophomore David Laury was named MAAC Co-Player of the Week for his performance during the team’s recent trip to Western New York. With his first career award, Laury becomes the third Gael to receive a MAAC Player of the Week honor this season.
Laury extended his double-double streak to five games and recorded his sixth and seventh of the season. He averaged 17.5 points, 16.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 blocks at Niagara and Canisius. Laury shot 57.1% (12-of-21) from the field and converted 11-of-16 free throw attempts.
Laury led the Maroon & Gold with 24 points and 16 rebounds in a heartbreaking OT loss against the Purple Eagles Thursday night. He then posted 11 points, 16 rebounds and five assists with just one turnover vs. the Golden Griffins Saturday. Despite appearing in just 13 games this season, Laury is second in the MAAC with seven double-doubles in 2012-13.
The first-year post performer joins teammates Lamont Jones and Sean Armand as MAAC Players of the Week in 2012-13. Jones was named twice on Nov. 19 and Dec. 17. Armand most recently earned the award on Jan. 14. Iona is the only team with three different players named MAAC Player of the Week this year.
Laury shared the award with Fairfield’s Maurice Barrow.
The Gaels are back in action this week for two games at the Hynes Center when they host Rider Thursday (Feb. 7) and Marist Saturday (Feb. 9).
