NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 74-73 double overtime decision to Manhattan in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Draddy Gymnasium. Jasper sophomore Emmy Andujar's layup with 3.8 seconds left in the second extra frame proved to be the game winner. The hard-luck Gaels (15-11, 9-6 MAAC) lost its fifth MAAC game this season by three points or loss.
Senior Lamont Jones had 17 points to lead the Maroon & Gold. Junior Sean Armand and sophomore David Laury added 16 points apiece. Armand added six boards and four steals. Combined, however, the Gaels "big three" shot just 16-for-44 (36.4%) from the field. Senior Taaj Ridley recorded his second double-double in the last four games with 12 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.
The Jaspers (10-15, 8-7 MAAC) were led by junior Rhamel Brown's 21-point, 17-rebound, 7-block effort. Andujar and sophomore Shane Richards had 15 points each while sophomore Donovan Kates added 10 for the home team in the win.
The see-saw battle saw 11 tie scores and nine lead changes in the 50 minutes of action. Neither team could gain a significant advantage. Both teams’ largest leads came early in the first half. The Gaels led 11-4 after a Laury layup four minutes into the game. The advantage was erased by a 9-0 Jasper run over the next 2:27. The run extended to 15-2 after a Brown layup gave Manhattan a 19-13 lead with 11:32 to play for the Jaspers largest lead of the contest.
Jones had a shot to give the Gaels a lead at the end of regulation and first overtime periods. An 15-foot floater and a 35-foot jumper both rimmed out setting up the second overtime.
Trailing by two points with the shot clock off, junior Michael Alvarado was fouled with 11.1 seconds left. After hitting the first, Alvarado missed the second and the rebound caromed to Brown, his 10th offensive board of the contest. Brown found a streaking Andujar who spun to the basket for the go-ahead layup.
Manhattan's biggest advantage was 50-34 on the boards. The Jaspers corralled 22 offensive rebounds. The home team also outshot the Gaels 41.2% - 38.5%.
Iona is back in action on Monday night when they take on Fairfield at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport.
