NEW YORK, NY - The Iona College women's indoor track team earned first place finishes in four events at the 2012 MAAC Championships at the New Balance Armory Track and Field Center. The Gaels swept all distance events from the mile to the 5k.
Senior Marion Joly-Testault was named Co-Most Outstanding performer after finishing first in both the 3000- and 5000-meter events. In the 3k, her 10:12.68 was more than four seconds faster than Loyola's Kiera Harrison in second place. Teammate Jeanne Mack finished third in 10:18.47.
Joly-Testault and Harrison had a hotly contested finish in the 5k as the Iona senior nipped her competitor by 12 one-hundredths of a second. She finished in 17:10.08. The duo finished more than 50 seconds behind the third place performer.
Iona's other individual MAAC Champion was junior Kirsten Stewart in the mile run. Stewart finished in 4:54.87, more than three seconds ahead of Rider's Emily Ritter. Mack crossed in fourth place (4:59.32) followed closely behind by senior Luci McLoughlin (4:59.97) while senior Erin Brady was tenth overall.
Iona's distance medley relay team of McLoughlin, Stewart, sophomore Marlene Delices and junior Leigh Mazzella earned first place honors. The Gaels dominated the event, defeating Marist by nine seconds.
Other Top 10 finishes for the Gaels included Delices (9th, 2:20.91) and Mazzella (10th, 2:21.71) in the 800 meter run.
As a team the Maroon & Gold finished fourth overall. Saint Peter's earned the team title.
