NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Senior Kylie Gregory set the Iona College single-game record in goals and points as the lacrosse team snapped a six-game losing streak with a 16-9 victory over local MAAC rival Manhattan on Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field.
Gregory finished with a career-high eight goals and 10 points in the contest to propel her team to their first victory in nearly a month. Junior Brittney Mabus added five points in the contest with four goals and an assist. Freshman Mary Kate McCormick scored three goals and sophomore Meghan Testoni had a goal and an assist.
Iona (3-9, 1-1 MAAC) outshot the Jaspers 32-21, won 16 draw controls and cleared 14-of-17 attempts. Sophomore Blaire Nathanson won her first game of the season and made eight saves.
Gregory gave Iona a 1-0 lead with 23:08 remaining. Manhattan’s Kelsey Rehain tied the game two minutes later on a free position shot. The Gaels went on a 5-1 run to end the half and held a 6-2 advantage. Gregory added two goals to complete the first half hat trick during the run with McCormick scoring twice and Testoni scoring early to broke the 1-1 tie at 18:16.
17 goals were scored in the second half, with Gregory scoring five times. Iona took its largest lead 16-8 with 7:27 remaining on Gregory’s eighth tally of the day from Testoni.
Iona will have a week off and prepare for local MAAC rival Fairfield on April 10 at 3 p.m.
