POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Iona College softball team moved to an even 5-5 in league play as the Gaels split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader with Marist Saturday afternoon at Gartland Field. In the opener, Iona dropped a one run decision to the Red Foxes 5-4 before running away with a 12-4 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, the Red Foxes got out to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning courtesty of a home run by Nicole Cheek to right field off Iona starter Carly Argyle.
Iona was able to trim the deficit to one with two runs in the top of the third frame. Back-to-back errors by Marist allowed senior Jodi Petersen and sophomore Brianna Schauer to reach. After a walk to senior Beth Kann loaded the bases, freshman Sarah Schutz delivered a two-run single to right center, immediatle putting Iona back in the contest.
Marist extended its lead to two in the bottom of the inning, when Alyssa Zahka drove in Kyrsten Van Natta with an RBI groundout to third. The Red Foxes got their final run of the contest on a solo home run by Danielle Koltz in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, Iona rallied for two runs when freshman Sydney Dimon scored on a Marist error and Petersen scored on a fielder's choice. The one run margin was as close as the Gaels would get as Iona would allow pick up one base runner over the final two innings of the game.
Emily Osterhaus (8-7) picked up the game one win for Marist, allowing four runs, one earned, along with six hits over seven innings. Argyle (6-17) took the loss for Iona, allowing five earned runs on four hits and six walks in six innings.
In the nightcap, Iona got out in front with a run in the second inning when freshman Brianna King reached on a Marist error, scoring Argyle who got on with a leadoff walk.
The Gaels then exploded for five runs in the third inning. Schauer led off with a home run to left field, the first of her career on her 264th collegiate at bat. Kann would follow with a homer to left center, her seventh of the season. The final big blast of the inning came when junior Katie Jansson launched her third home runs of the season to left field, scoring Argyle and Schutz.
In the fourth inning, Iona continued its offensive assault, scoring two runs. With two outs, Kann singled to left field before Schutz followed with a double to left, putting two in scoring position. Sophomore Allison Hand then delivered a single to right field, scoring the duo.
In the fifth inning, Marist got its first two runs of the game courtesy of a home run by Aly Klemmer.
In the seventh inning, the Gaels once again put up crooked digits courtesy of a grand slam by Schutz, her second extra base hit of the game. Dimon reached on a one out single before Petersen followed with one of her own. One batter later, Kann was intentionally walked, allowing Schutz to deliver the big blow.
Down ten entering their final at bat of the contest, Marist would score two runs on a single by Sarah Carmody with two outs. The Gaels would be able to secure the final out by way of a pop up to short.
Argyle bounced back from the opener to pick up her seventh win of the season in the finale. Argyle allowed four runs, 11 hits and three walks in seven innings. Janine Lalli (4-3) took the loss for Marist, allowing six runs, four earned, on five hits and one walk in 2.1 innings.
Iona resumes action on Tuesday, when they travel to Fordham for a non-conference matchup beginning at 3:00 pm.
