CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Iona College men's and women's outdoor track teams competed at the Virginia Challenge Saturday afternoon. Men's junior Matthew Gillespie and freshman Kieran Clements and women's junior Kirsten Stewart represented the Gaels at the University of Virginia.
Gillespie was the top collegiate finisher in the 5,000-meter event. His time of 14:10.21 was second overall. He finished less than four seconds behind the race winner and was more than a half second ahead of host Virginia’s Mark Amirault. Clements was sixth overall in the event in 14:25.52.
Stewart finished fifth in the second heat and was 15th overall in a time of 4:22.05. Her time was a personal best and the third fastest time in school history. Stewart was just over two seconds behind her second winner. West Virginia's Kelly Williams was the race winner. Iona graduate Heidi Gregson finished third overall in 4:13.05 racing professionally for Furman Elite Track Club.
