LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - The Iona College baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Rider in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Pittaro Field. The Gaels fell 11-6 in the opener and 3-2 in eight innings the night cap.
Senior 3B Matthew Kriss and junior OFs Joe Torres and Joe Smith each had two hits in the game one defeat. Smith was 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. He hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning, his second of the season. Kriss was also 2-for-4 posting two RBI. He drove in the first run of the game with an RBI triple in the opening inning. Torres was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Senior 1B Chris Sand recorded the Gaels sixth RBI of the contest with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
Rider was led by three hits and three RBI a piece from SS Mike Parsons and LF Ian Lindsay. Tyler Smith earned the win.
In game two, the Gaels held a 2-1 advantage through the first six and a half innings. Rider scored the tying run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and the game winner in the eighth.
Rooike 2B Matt Byrne and sophomore LF Jimmy Giuliano had two hits a piece. Byrne was 2-for-3 with a run scored while Giuliano was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Freshman 1B Christian Choman reached base in all three plate appearances with a double and two walks.
Rider's Lindsay had three more hits in the second game. He scored the game winning run in the eighth on RF Jerry Mulderig's single. Reliever Sean Kuberiet earned the win in relief after stranding two batters in his only inning of play.
The Gaels complete the series Monday with a single game at 3:30 pm.
