NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College women's basketball rising junior Damika Martinez is currently in Puerto Rico in a weeklong workout with Puerto Rico's national team that will compete in the 2013 Stankovich Cup, held in China from July 3-13.
"I'm very excited to get a chance to play with some of the top international players in the world," said Martinez. "I hope my experience here will help take my game to the next level."
Launched by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the Stankovic Cup is an annual tournament that has been held since 2005. The tournament has been held in the country of China every year since its inception.
Last season, Martinez led the MAAC in scoring for the second consecutive season, averaging 18.1 points per game while connecting on a league high 79 three pointers. The 79 three pointers set a new single season record.
Martinez was also credited with 5.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals per game. In league play, Martinez also led the MAAC in scoring, averaging 17.6 points per game. In the team's final regular season contest, Martinez became the first Iona women's basketball player to reach 1,000 career points in two seasons.
