NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer picked up its first victory of the 2013 season with a 2-1 victory over Albany Friday afternoon at Mazzella Field. Knotted at one, junior Safi Ayinde put away in the game winner with a header in the 66th minute.

After Iona pushed the offensive tempo early, outshooting Albany 5-3 over the first 30 minutes, the Great Danes struck first when a scrum in the Iona box led to a goal by Aubrey VanGorder, her second of the season.

Less than two minutes later, the Gaels would even the score at one. Off a corner kick by senior Sofia Sanchez, sophomore Kim Marra connected and put a shot past the Albany defense for her first tally of the year.

In the 66th minute, Iona took the lead for good. After a cross pass from the right side by senior Nicole Paulucci, Aynide headed in her first goal of the season to push the Gaels to the one goal victory.

The win marked the first career victory for head coach Linda Hathorn.  The Gaels outshot the Great Danes 12-5 in the contest, and held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Trista Rivera was credited with one save in the contest while Albany's Alana Brennan had five stops.

Iona is back in action Sunday at 1:00 pm, when they take on Fordham in the Bronx, NY.
