NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team opened up its 2013 home slate with a 2-0 victory over Albany Tuesday afternoon at Mazzella Field.
Iona controlled the offensive momentum in the first half, as the Gaels outshot their opponents 10-3 over the first 45 minutes. In the 27th minute, the Gaels would break through for their first tally of the contest. After being rewarded a corner kick, junior Ignacio Maganto sent the kick into the box where senior Michael Hodgen was able to head it into the right side of the net for his first goal of the season.
In the second half, the Great Danes came out reenergized and put constant pressure on the Gaels. In the 76th minute, Iona would be able to draw a turnover and move the ball back towards the Albany goal. Sophomore Dylan Cope got the ball just past midfield and found senior Samuel Adjei on the right side racing towards the net. Adjei would start a give and go with classmate Franklin Castellanos. Castellanos would find Adjei in the Albany box where the forward was able to get a shot off with back to the goal that resulted in his third tally of the season.
Overall, Iona outshot the opposition 15-12 and managed five corner kicks to Albany's four. Sophomore Julian Petrello made five saves, including four in a busy second half. His Albany counterpart, Tim Allen, made six stops.
Iona returns to action this Saturday when they visit Columbia for a 4:00 pm kickoff.
