Softball Academic Efforts Recognized By NFCA
LOUISVILLE, KY - The Iona College softball team was recognized as one of top squads nationally in the classroom last season, earning recognition as a Division I All-Academic Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
The Gaels earned a 3.33 GPA last season and were one of three MAAC institutions to be recognized in the Top 50. The 2013 season marked the Gaels fourth year in a row the Gaels were named to the All-Academic Team.
Additionally, the Gaels had six players recognized among the over 4,000 student-athletes tabbed as All-America Scholar-Athletes. Recent graduate Beth Kann, senior Katie Jansson and sophomores Christine Costello, Jordan Courage, Sarah Schutz and Sydney Dimon made up the sextet of Iona honorees.
“Iona softball has shown a great tradition of academic excellence throughout the years," commented head coach Melissa Inouye. "It shows our commitment to success both on and off the field. It is great to see six of our student-athletes recognized by the NFCA as it is a true testament to their time management and study skills. We hope to continue this tradition of academic excellence every year.”
The award is bestowed upon any player submitted by a member coach who achieved a 3.50 grade point average or higher during the 2012-13 academic year.
