NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Junior MF Ignacio Maganto recorded his first collegiate hat trick in leading the Iona College men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Rider in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Mazzella Field. Maganto connected twice in the first half and once in the second in the win.
For Iona, it marked the second consecutive season in which a Gael found the net three times against the Broncs (Ansger Otto, 10/21/12) and for Maganto, was the junior's second career multi-goal effort (10/14/11, at Marist).
Early in the 24th minute, freshman Vincent Harrington played a ball to senior Franklin Castellanos outside the penalty area. Iona's leading point scorer found Maganto inside six yards. Maganto played a deflection off the keeper for a tap in goal from less than a yard away to give Iona an early advantage.
Twelve minutes later he scored his second of the match. Maganto took the ball away from a Rider defender near midfield and dribbled all the way through the 18-yard stripe. After finding space, he drilled a shot into the upper right corner and Iona led 2-0 at the half.
The third time was the charm for the Broncs in the 59th minute as the last of three straight corner kicks resulted in a goal. Warren Holmes headed home Travis Nitti's corner attempt to half their deficit with 31:13 remaining in the contest. Iona nearly answered less than a minute later. Jannick Martens found himself with a breakaway opportunity and his shot attempt sailed high.
Maganto picked up the hat trick with less than nine minutes to go off a Gael set piece. Castellanos earned his second assist of the game, finding Maganto with a nify feed on a free kick opportunity. With the second helper, it was his fifth multi-point contest of the season.
The Gaels continue action at home on Wednesday when they host Fairfield.
