NEW ROCHELLE, NY – In a unique moment in KU and Iona College basketball history, Iona College President Dr. Joseph E. Nyre will return to his alma mater, the University of Kansas, when the Gaels' men's basketball program takes on the Jayhawks on Tuesday, Nov. 19, in Lawrence, KS.

"I’m pleased to be returning to my alma mater and to Lawrence with the Iona Gaels,” President Nyre said. “Basketball is so much a part of the fabric of both KU and Iona, and I'm looking forward to sharing Iona with Kansas and Kansas with Iona.”

Dr. Nyre received both an Ed.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Kansas before going on to complete post-doctoral fellowships at both KU and Harvard Medical School. He is the first president selected to lead the New York Catholic College that is not a Christian Brother. Since arriving in 2011, Dr. Nyre has been recognized for many accomplishments including but not limited to:

  • Initiating, completing and implementing a comprehensive five-year strategic plan: Advancing our Legacy and Defining Our Future, to advance academic and student distinction, improve the campus infrastructure, increase resources for students and faculty, and promote the Iona story.
  • Smallest combined tuition and room/board increase in 10 years.
  • Increased support for student financial aid, resulting in a declining net cost of attendance and top 100 national ranking (90) for return on investment (ROI).
  • Launched new student academic support programs, a student success center, and new academic programs,
  • Improved faculty offices and launched new faculty recognition and development programs.
  • Substantially grew the college’s endowment and annual fundraising.
  • Developed and executed a residential housing strategy.
  • Grew campus land holdings by approximately 20 percent.

Dr. Nyre and his wife, the former Kelli McIntyre (who is a Kansas native), reside in New Rochelle with their four wonderful children who are regularly present at campus activities and sporting events. The Nyres are avid basketball supporters and will also be in attendance for the KU-Iona basketball game.

The Iona men’s basketball program has won 20 or more games in each of the last four seasons including the last three with head coach Tim Cluess at the helm. Under Cluess, the Gaels reached the 2011 Postseason Tournament Championship game and the NCAA Championship in 2012 and 2013.  The Maroon & Gold are the reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships entering the 2013-14 campaign.

Seven returnees and five newcomers comprise the Gaels roster including senior Sean Armand and junior David Laury, who were selected to the Preseason All-MAAC First Team. Armand and fellow seniors Tre Bowman and Mike Poole serve as the team’s tri-captains.

Iona College, founded in 1940, is located in New Rochelle, N.Y. (20 miles north of Midtown Manhattan), with graduate classes also offered in Rockland County, N.Y., and Manhattan. Iona is a four-year private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers and American Catholic higher education. It is a diverse community of learners and scholars dedicated to academic excellence and the values of justice, peace and service.
