NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College men’s soccer head coach Fernando Barboto announced the signing of four student-athletes to join the Gaels this upcoming season. The quartet joins the six players previously signed in the spring.
“We have been working hard to bring these young men into our program for a long time, and it is with great pleasure that we announce that they will be attending Iona this fall," said Barboto. “These four players complement the initial group we signed earlier and make the 2014 recruiting class one of the best in program history”.
Tyler Pinho is a 5-10 defender who attended St. Benedicts High School in Newark, NJ and played for PDA Soccer Club.
Barboto on Pinho: “Tyler is a very technical player and excellent distributor of the ball under pressure. He is tenacious and very intelligient in his defending and timing of his tackles.”
Marcos Nunez is a 5-8 forward who attended La Salle San Ildentonso in Tenerife, Spain and played for CD Tenerife.
Barboto on Nunez: Marcos is very crafty, and an elusive attacker with the ball in his possession. He is very good in one-on-one situations and we feel he will come in and contribute a great deal to our attack.”
Jon Luke Ferrandino is a 5-10 midfield transfer from the University of Connecticut. Ferrnandino played scholastically at New Canaan High School in New Canaan, NJ and played for NJSA Club.
Barboto on Ferrandino: “Jon Luke is very technical with a silky left foot. He is a good passer of the ball and we feel he will be able to arrive and give our midfield plenty of depth.”
Franky Martinez is a 6-1 defender who attended Academies of Englewood HS in New Jersey and played for PDA Soccer Club.
Barboto on Martinez: “Franky is one of the most talented pure center backs presently in the country. We expect him to come in and contribute immediately, and become the backbone of the Iona defense for years to come.”
The Gaels will host two exhibition contests at home to open the season, against NJIT (Aug. 16) and Hartford (Aug. 23) before officially opening up the 2014 campaign at Boston University on Aug. 29 at 7:00 pm.
