Rowing Trio Competes At USRowing Club Nationals
NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College men's rowing senior Ryan Harding along with alums Benjamin Saks '11 and Evan Johnson '14 competed in the club circuit this summer rowing for the New York Athletic Club.
Because the Gaels and NYAC train in the same waterway, Iona has a long tradition of sending over some if its top athletes to NYAC in hopes of winning US National Championships for the Club. Admission to the Club is by invitation only and selection is highly competitive. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum baseline speed for consideration.
At the National Championships in Oak Ridge, TN, the trio brought home a total of seven medals. Saks was the coxswain for the silver medal winning senior lightweight 8 and senior lightweight 4. Johnson and Harding were both in the gold medal-winning intermediate lightweight 8 boat and Johnson also secured gold in the intermediate lightweight 4. Saks was the gold medal winning coxswain in those two events last summer. The NYAC has dominated those events in recent years.
