EUGENE, OR - A final push towards the last half of the 10,000 meter this evening at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship helped land Gilbert Kirui of the Iona College track & field team on the First Team All-America list.
Kirui claimed sixth place in the 10,000 meter final behind a time of 29:09.42, finishing just ahead of a 29:09.83 time from seventh place finisher Matthew Baxter of Northern Arizona.
After falling towards the back of the pack early one, Kirui used a 1:08.58 lap at the 5,200 meter mark to climb into the leaders. The time was the second fastest among the group during that lap. In the final lap, the sophomore kicked to a 1:01.45 time after a 1:05.01 time in the second to last split to secure his spot on the First Team.
Johannes Motschmann also competed for the Gaels this evening, finishing 19th overall in the 3,000 meter steeplechase semifinal. Motschmann registered a 9:01.28 time in the second heat to earn 10th place in that race.
Looking ahead, Chartt Miller concludes the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the Maroon & Gold on Friday by competing in the 5,000 meter final at 10:25 PM ET on ESPN.
