LOUDONVILLE, NY – Despite out shooting the opposition, the Iona College lacrosse team dropped a pivotal MAAC contest on the road to Siena 8-6 on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Gaels drop a game behind the Saints and into a three-way tie for third place in the playoff hunt with two games remaining.
Senior Emily Taddei led the team with two goals and got help from teammates junior Kylie Gregory and Brittney Mabus with a pair of points. Senior Casey Scully and freshman Casey Palmer also tallied for the visitors. In goal, sophomore Maria Ortiz made a valiant effort in the crease and made five saves.
Taddei scored the opening goal before Siena rattled off three consecutive tallies to take a 3-1 lead at 18:22. Mabus added her ninth of the season, but a Siena goal regained the three goal edge. Palmer’s tally late in the first half allowed the Gaels back into the contest as it took little time before they tied the contest to begin the second half on a marker by Gregory from Mabus.
Once again Siena added three consecutive goals as the Gaels tried to make a fierce comeback. Scully scored with 14:20 remaining, but Siena answered two minutes later. Taddei added her second with 8:45 remaining but the Saints defense didn’t allow another goal.
Deirdre McQuillan led the Saints with three goals and Michelle Andrea had two goals and an assist. Kristin Concorida made 10 saves for the win.
Iona will take on local MAAC rival Manhattan on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
