Softball Unable To Contain Army

WEST POINT, NY - The Iona College softball team was held to just hits in seven innings, and a five run sixth inning for the Black Knights pushed Army to a 5-0 win over the Gaels Tuesday afternoon at the Army Softball Complex.

Iona starter Sarah Jackson kept Army off the scoreboard over the four innings, allowing just one hit. Senior Alyssa Maiese took over in the circle in the fifth, and after getting through the inning, Army broke open the game in the sixth, benefitting from five hits, three fielding errors, a hit batsman and wild pitch in pushing across five runs, just one earned.

With one out, Army's April Ortenzo reached on an infield error. Amanda Nguyen reached on an infield hit and Alex Reynolds loaded the bases on a bunt single. An error on a pick off attempt on Ortenzo at third allowed her to score and moved Nguyen and Reynolds up a base. Alexis AuBuchon struck out swinging and Nguyen scored on the play when AuBuchon ran to first base.

With two outs, Reynolds crossed on a wild pitch for to move the Black Knights ahead 3-0. Marina Northup was hit by a pitch and was removed for pinch runner Ashton Wolf, who scored after rounding the bases after a misplay in the oufield on Reanna Johnson's single. Alex Gaff's single to left center field scored Johnson with the final run.

After being touched for a leadoff double in the top of the second by Maiese, Army's Maggie Lashley retired 15 straight batters. After yielding her second hit to senior Deanne Algeo to lead off the seventh, Lashley retired the side to pick up her 23rd win of the season.

Iona is back in action Thursday, when they travel to Drexel for a non-conference game.
