NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Despite four goals from senior Emily Taddei, the Iona College lacrosse team dropped a season-ending MAAC contest to Canisius, 14-10, on Senior Day at Mazzella Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Gaels fail to qualify for the MAAC tournament, but the 2012 squad set a new single-season win record with nine victories on the season.
Juniors Brittney Mabus and Kylie Gregory combined for nine points on the afternoon, as Mabus finished with a goal and four assists, while Gregory had two goals and two helpers. Senior Casey Scully finished her career with a pair of goals and sophomores Brenna Lade and Nina Veneziale contributed with two assists and a goal, respectively.
Both squads traded goals throughout the first half with the Golden Griffs taking a 6-5 lead into the half scoring with just 26 seconds remaining. Scully gave the Gaels a, 2-1, lead with a pair of tallies three minutes apart.
Gregory once again gave Iona a 4-3 advantage after Taddei tied the score at 15:05. The hosts tied the game for the third time with 9:37 remaining on Veneziale’s 16th of the season.
Canisius’ Megan Oosting gave her team the final lead of the half with under 30 seconds remaining.
Iona tied quickly to begin the final period of the regular season, but the visitors scored four unanswered goals to take an 11-6 edge. The Maroon & Gold made every attempt to inch closer to Canisius but Carly Quinn scored each time Iona did and scored the final goal of the season with 5:04 remaining.
Lindsey Morgan led Canisius with five goals and Quinn had four points (two goals and two assists).
In the cage, Iona sophomore Maria Ortiz made nine saves and her opposition Gina Molfetta made three saves.
