Five Gaels Named To The 2012 Lacrosse All-MAAC Team

BUFFALO, NY – The Iona College lacrosse team capped off a record breaking season in which the Gaels set a new high in single-season victories with nine, took home six All-MAAC honorees, including one of the three MAAC Defensive Player of the Year awards, as announced by the conference at the MAAC Tournament Banquet hosted by Canisius.

Graduate Student Stephanie Sumcizk will end her career with the Gaels as one of three recipients of the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year Award. Sumcizk is joined on the award by Megan Leonard of Canisius and Amanda Corse from Siena.  Sumcizk ranked second on the Gaels with 20 caused turnovers and third with 24 ground balls.

The Gaels received four All-MAAC First Team selections this season as seniors Casey Scully and Amber Zimmerlink join Sumcizk and junior Kylie Gregory as top MAAC performers.

Junior Brittney Mabus was the lone Gael chosen to the Second Team and in the inaugural All-Rookie squad, freshman Meghan Testoni took the honors.

Five Gaels were also named to the MAAC All-Academic Team. Senior Kelsey Sickles, sophomores Nina Veneziale, Kristen Flynn, Nicole Brancaccio, Mabus and Sumcizk were among 58 total student-athletes named to the list.
