Head Coach Brian Kelly
“We fought hard. It was a tough game. They shot block really well. I was a litle disappointed in our 6-on-5s. We really didn’t get much going and obviously, you need to score here on your extra-player possessions - that’s for sure. (UCLA) moves quick and as much as you want to drop and help two-meter, our rotations weren’t there so we could get in position to shot block and that hurt us. You get shooters like UCLA and they are going to score.”
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The seventh-seeded Iona College women's water polo team opened up the first round of the 2012 NCAA Water Polo Championship Friday afternoon with a 14-3 loss to second-seeded UCLA at the Aztec Aquaplex on the campus of San Diego State University. The Bruins attacked early, outscoring the Gaels 5-1 in the first and 4-1 in the second to move on to the semifinals.
The Bruins quickly got out in front, scoring three straight goals early on before the Gaels were able to get their first shot on goal. After Iona called a timeout, UCLA's attack was slowed down but the Bruins were able to push their lead to 5-0 before senior Mackenzie Mone got Iona on the board with just under a minute remaining in the first quarter.
UCLA opened the second with the ball after winning the swimoff, but Iona's defense stood tall, stopping the Bruins' first two opporunities before senior Cecilia Leonard cut the UCLA lead to three with a goal. From there, UCLA would pick up their offensive tempo again, scoring the final four goals of the second quarter to take a 9-2 lead into the half.
Iona was held in check throughout the third, as UCLA scored three more goals to take a 12-2 lead before Mone scored her second of the game with just under 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter. UCLA would answer right back, ending the quarter with a goal in the final seven seconds. In the fourth, UCLA wrapped up the scoring with one goal in the final eight minutes.
