NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College rising junior Chelsea Cabarcas has been called up to the Colombian Senior National Team with a chance to compete for the country in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Cabarcas is one of 22 players, including 12 collegiate players, to be named to the squad with other schools including Indiana University, University of Miami, University of Arizona and Washington University represented.
“We are all very proud of Chelsea and how far she has come since stepping foot on campus last August," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "To have the opportunity to compete in the London Olympics this summer is an amazing honor and, as a program, we are all looking forward to cheering her on as Colombia takes on the worlds best!”
The squad, coached by Ricardo Rozo, is currently preparing for a pair of international games against the Brazilian national team on June 27 and June 30. After this cycle of training, the team will meet at the end of July to begin the final stage of preparation which will include a tour of international games and the trip to Europe with the final 18 players that will compete at the games in London.
A season ago, Cabarcas appeared in 14 games for the Gaels, recording six shots. She has previously competed as a member of the U17 Colombian National Team.
The team is paired in Group G, along with the United States, France and North Korea and opens up play against North Korea on July 25th at 2:45 pm.
