The Iona College women's basketball team, under the direction of head coach Anthony Bozzella, will get an early start on its preparation for the 2012-13 campaign when the team travels north of the border next month for a series of practices and exhibitions in the Ontario province of Canada.

"The team, the staff and I are very excited to commence practice and play five games against top international opponents this summer," said Bozzella. "I know this will be a tremendous educational and athletic experience for all our young ladies."

The trip marks the second international trip under Coach Bozzella.  In the summer of 2004, the Gaels traveled to Europe, playing in England and Italy.

Beginning Aug. 10, the Gaels will begin the trek up north, and start play on Monday, Aug. 13 when they take on Brock Univeristy in St. Catharine's, Ontario.  Following a bus ride to Ottawa, the Gaels will then face Carleton University on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 8:00 pm.  Thursday, Aug. 16 will include a game against the University of Ottawa at 6:00 pm before rematches with Carleton on Friday, Aug. 17 at 8:00 pm and a final game against Ottawa at 10:00 am on Saturday, Aug. 18 before the team travels back to New Rochelle.

Iona fans can follow each game online as will provide gameday coverage and live audio of each contest and the trip will be chronicled in a daily blog written by a player.

The Gaels return eight players from a season ago, including MAAC Rookie of the Year and All-MAAC Second Team selection Damika Martinez, as well as fellow MAAC All-Rookie Team member Aleesha Powell.  In 2011-12, Martinez become the first freshman in conference history to lead the MAAC in scoring, averaging 16.0 points per game en route to being named the All-Met Division I Rookie of the Year by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association.

In addition, the Gaels picked up a win at the MAAC Championship for the sixth time in the past seven seasons, one of only two teams to accomplish such a feat. The team also finished with a perfect score of 1000 in the APR, one of only five schools in the country to secure a perfect score in five of the last six years.

Prior to the trip, the Gaels will host an open practice on Saturday, August 4 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Hynes Center.  Following a practice that will include drills, a run through of plays and a scrimmage, coaches will be available for a question and answer session.  Prospective student-athletes will be able to take a tour of campus as well as have an opportunity to speak with current Iona players.  Team practices from Aug. 6-8 are also open to public viewing.
