WBB Tops Brock 67-59 In Canada Trip Opener
ST. CATHERINE'S, ONTARIO - Sophomore guard Damika Martinez scored 30 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Iona College women's basketball team opened up its summer trip of Canada with a 67-59 win over Brock University at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
After tying the game at two early in the first quarter, Brock would go on an 11-6 run to take a 13-8 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the first quarter. Shortly after trailing 15-10, Iona would begin a comeback. After tying the game at 17 on a jumper by freshman guard Kadesia Johnson, Iona would close out the first quarter on a 5-0 run on a jumper by Martinez and a three pointer by senior guard Diana Hubbard to take a 22-17 lead after the opening frame.
In a back and forth early second quarter, Iona would extend its lead to six on a free throw by senior forward Jiya Dorcas-Eya put the Gaels ahead 29-23. Brock would go on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 29 with just three minutes remaining in the half. A quick three pointer by Martinez stopped the Badgers' momentum as the reigning MAAC Rookie of the Year would score the next eight points for the Gaels before a basket by junior guard Shonice Hawkins put Iona ahead 39-32 at the half.
The Gaels would take control of the game in the third, outscoring Brock 18-8 in the stanza to push the lead to 17 at 57-40 entering the final quarter. Two early free throws by Hubbard in the opening minutes of the quarter put Iona ahead by a game high 19. Iona kept the lead at double digits until Brock closed out the game out on a 5-0 run to cut the final deficit to eight points.
Martinez shot 13-23 from the field for Iona, including three three-pointers as the only Gael in double figures as nine players reached the scoring column for Iona. Sophomore guard Aleesha Powell had eight and seven assists, while freshman guard Aaliyah Robinson had seven points and six rebounds. Brock was led by Nicole Rosenkranz, who scored 19 points and pulled down ten rebounds.
Iona will spend Tuesday traveling to its next destination of Ottawa, Ontario before resuming play Wednesday against Carleton at 8:00 pm.
