NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with Fairleigh Dickinson in non-conference action in the 2012 season opener for the Gaels. A goal late in the first half by the Maroon & Gold was followed up by a Knights tally early in the second and accounted for the two scores in the contest.
Fairleigh Dickinson came out of the gate with great energy and recorded the first five shots of the contest through the first 20+ minutes. Junior Nicole Paulucci turned the momentum of the game in the Gaels direction, recording the team's first shot in the 32nd minute. Iona would record four of the last five shots in the half.
With less than two minutes to play in the frame and the ball deep in FDU territory, senior Leah Taylor played her own throw in off a Knight defender. Her ensuing cross found freshman Alex Chinich inside the six-yard box as the rookie converted her first collegiate goal from the left side of the goalkeeper.
The Gaels held a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard but it was FDU with the 6-4 advantage in shots, 4-3 on goal and 3-0 in corner kicks.
Both teams jockeyed back and forth to create its own offense. It was the Knights that broke through in the 58th minute and found an equalizer. Kasey Schiavoni's played a corner kick that pin balled around the box. Esther Rochon redirected an Amanda Goulet header on goal. Iona keeper Trista Rivera appeared to make a great save, but the linesman's flag rose to signify the ball crossing the plane of the back line and the score was tied at 1-1.
Only Christina Tesoriero for the Gaels recorded a shot on goal for the rest of regulation as the score remained tied through 90 minutes.
Each team had a great chance to win in the first overtime. In the 97th minute a cross by sophomore Gabriella Fudulli found the foot of Cinich and a near wide open net. The rookie's one time attempt sailed high. Two minutes later, FDU had a shot to end it. Rachel Hoekstra got behind the Iona defenders and had a one-on-one opportunity with Rivera. Iona's junior goalkeeper stopped a point blank shot attempt from Hoekstra in what would be the final chance for either team the remainder of the overtime.
