BUFFALO WILD WING STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK– Lamont Jones, men’s Basketball
Iona College men’s basketball senior guard Lamont Jones was named Buffalo Wild Wings Student-Athlete of the Week after averaged 34.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in two games this week for the Gaels.
The 34.5 ppg average was more than 10 points above his season scoring average. Jones had back-to-back 30+ point efforts for the Gaels becoming just the seventh player in Iona history and first since Mike Glover in 2010-11 to accomplish the feat. He shot 50.0% (22-of-44) from the field and 80.8% (21-for-26) from the line.
Jones posted 37 points Thursday in a heartbreaking double overtime defeat to Marist. He recorded his fourth game with 30 or more points with 32 in a win over Rider Sunday. Jones’ 69 points scored was the second-highest among NCAA Division I performers last week (Nate Wolters, South Dakota State, 89 points).
On the season his 162 free throws made are five more than Virginia Tech’s Erick Green for most in the nation. His 22.9 ppg scoring average ranks No. 3 in the NCAA.
