Marina Lizarazu - Women's Basketball
On Monday, Jan. 23, senior Marina Lizarazu of the Iona College women’s basketball program was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week. It is the second time this season that the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year has taken home the weekly accolade.
On Friday, Jan. 20, Lizarazu returned to the starting lineup for the first time in four games and put forth a career-best performance against the Manhattan Jaspers at Draddy Gymnasium. She scored a career-high 26 points, shooting 10-for-17 (.58) from the floor, and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Additionally, Lizarazu had a team-high six assists to go along with four rebounds and four steals. The Maroon & Gold defeated the Jaspers, 76-62.
On Sunday, Jan. 22 against Monmouth, Lizarazu netted 24 points, scoring 12 of which in the fourth quarter on Iona’s 60-54 win. For the second straight game, she played all 40 minutes, and saved much of her heroics for late in the contest. Lizarazu was 10-of-12 from the free throw line, including a perfect 4-4 in the final 30 seconds. Staffing the stat sheet against the Hawks, she shot 7-for-16 (.43), pulled down five rebounds, and collected two assists and a pair of steals.
Lizarazu was also named the College Sports Madness MAAC Player of the Week and MBWA Player of the Week.
As of Monday, Jan. 23, Lizarazu ranks top 10 in the MAAC in scoring (13.8), assists (3.9), free throw percentage (.781), steals (2.6), assist/turnover ratio (1.2), and minutes per game (33.9).
Iona returns to action on Thursday early evening when it travels to Poughkeepsie, NY for a matchup against the Marist Red Foxes at 5:30 PM.
