John Schachinger
'91 is recognized as one of the top defensive players in Iona College
football history. He holds the career
and single season and single-game sack records for the Gaels and is the only
player in school history to record more than 300 career tackles. Schachinger recorded 55.0 career sacks from
1987-90. The record stands as 19 more
than next highest performer on the list and more than double the third highest
career total. He recorded 17 sacks as a
rookie in 1987 and 15.0 sacks as a junior in 1989, the top two single-season
efforts in Iona history. Schachinger recorded four sacks in a game on
two occasions which ranks as the top performances since Iona
elevated to the varsity level for the 1978 season. He also holds the career mark with 331 career
tackles.
The two-year co-captain was
honored with the Joseph O'Connell Award as Iona's
top senior student-athlete in 1990. He
earned numerous accolades throughout his college career including Liberty
Conference Rookie of the Year in 1987, Liberty Conference All-Star honors in
1988, the conference's Player of the Year Award in 1989 and defensive player of
the year as a senior in 1990. Schachinger
also earned ECAC All-Defensive Team honors for his performance on the field.
