LACROSSE TEAM PREPARES PACKAGES FOR MIDNIGHT RUN
As part of Make A Difference Week (September 21-27, 2008), the women's lacrosse team, in affiliation with Campus Ministries, gathered at Montgomery House on Monday, September 22nd with other volunteers to prepare items for Midnight Run, which distributes food and clothing to the homeless in New York City.
The evening began with a volunteer prayer to focus our attention on the people we were serving. The team then divided into three groups, each with its own specific purpose. The first group sorted through donated clothing to find appropriate items for this time of year, folded and organized them to be given out later that week. The second group baked and decorated cookies to go with the other food being distributed that night. Finally, the third group wrote letters and cards of encouragement to brighten the spirits of those receiving the donations. The team closed the evening by writing individual reflections about their service.
The team was enthusiastic to be volunteering and making a difference. They were hopeful that their efforts would be warmly received. Make a Difference Week is focused on engaging the Iona community in hands-on acts of service and social justice as demonstration of commitment to community service.
