LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL - After playing to a scoreless tie, the No. 2 seeded Iona College men's soccer team defeated No. 10 seed Siena 4-3 on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals of the MAAC Championships at ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex.
After a scoreless regulation, as the two played to just over two weeks ago in Loudonville, the Gaels and Saints went to overtime. In the extra session, the squads each put five shots with neither squad able to get the golden goal. Siena had the contest's closest scoring chance with 30 seconds remaining when a header by Joe Miner was knocked away by freshman GK Borja Barbero.
After 110 minutes, the squads facced off in a shootout. For the Gaels, freshman Ignacio Maganto, junior Ansger Otto and sophomore Giovanni Tacconelli found the net as Iona took a 3-2 lead. Barbero stopped a shot by Siena's Nick Viaggio that preserved the one shot lead for the Maroon & Gold. After an Iona miss and a Siena goal to tie the shootout, sophomore MJ Nestor rifled a shot to the left side past a diving Siena keeper to put the Gaels back ahead by one. Siena's final shootout attempt went wide to the left and the Gaels took the shootout 4-3.
Overall, Siena outshot the Gaels 20-17, and led in corners 7-4. Barbero had three saves for Iona, while Siena's Jack Binks had one.
The Gaels will take on No. 6 Manhattan Sunday at 1:30 pm in the semifinal round. The Jaspers advanced with a 1-0 victory over No. 3 Loyola.
