EDISON, NJ - Three members of the Iona College men's basketball team received All-MAAC Postseason honors, as seniors Scott Machado and Mike Glover were named to the First Team and junior Lamont Jones was named to the Second Team, as announced by the MAAC on Monday evening.
Glover, a 6-foot-7, 215-pound forward from the Bronx, N.Y., earned a spot on the All-MAAC First Team for the second consecutive year. He finished the regular season ranked second in both scoring (18.1 ppg) and rebounding (9.1 rpg). Glover is also second in the nation in field goal percentage, netting 64.7 percent of his attempts from the field. For the second time in his college career, he was named the Oscar Robinson National Player of the Week after averaging 20.7 points and 7.5 rebounds in wins over Richmond and Vermont in December 2011. A three-time MAAC Player of the Week, he recorded 13 double-doubles and posted double figures in 29 games played this year.
Machado, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound guard from Queens, N.Y., is also a two-time member of the All-MAAC First Team. A finalist for the Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year award, he leads the nation in assists with 10.1 a night for the Gaels, while adding 13.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Machado is shooting 47.7 percent from the field, 40.2 percent from three-point range and 80.5 percent from the free throw line. Named MAAC Player of the Week four times this season, he posted double digits in 22 games and 11 double-doubles during the regular season as well as his first career triple double on Feb. 12.
Jones, a transfer from Arizona has stepped up in his first season with the Gales, averaged 16.2 points per game and had a career-high 43 points on February 2 against Canisius. Jones is also averaging three assists per game and had a career-high eight dishes against William & Mary on December 21. A versatile guard, Jones has finished in double figures in 25 games this season and has shot 46.2 percent from the field over the regular-season. Jones has reached 20 or more points 11 times this season and has led the team in scoring 11 times.
The first team is made up of Glover and Machado, Rakim Sanders from Fairfield, Erik Etherly from Loyola, George Beamon from Manhattan and OD Anosike of Siena. Glover and Machado are repeat selections from last season's First Team. These six players are now eligible to be named the 2011-2012 Pepsi Max MAAC Player of the Year, also selected by the head coaches of the league. The winner will be announced on Thursday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Postseason Awards Show located at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The show will be broadcast live on MAAC.TV.
