CULLOWHEE, NC – A five-run sixth inning rally by the Western Carolina Catamounts allowed for the three-game sweep of the Iona College baseball team 8-4 on Sunday afternoon at Hennon Stadium.
Senior 3B Chris Burke led the Gaels with two runs batted in and classmate Michael Chiaravalloti and sophomore 2B Bobby Vitulano each scored a run. Iona starting pitcher freshman John Nargoski lasted midway into the sixth allowing five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
Iona got on the board in the third inning beginning with a double down the right field line by freshman OF Jimmy Guiliano. Chiaravalloti scored Guiliano two batters later on an RBI ground out to the second baseman.
Western Carolina tied the game in the bottom of the inning, before Iona added to more in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. In the sixth with a man on after a Chiaravalloti single to right field, Burke sent a blast over the fence for a two-run home run.
The Catamounts rallied in the sixth and scored five runs to take a 6-3 advantage. Iona scored in the next inning to cut the deficit at 6-4 on a sacrifice fly by Vitulano scoring junior C Sean Menickella who singled earlier in the inning.
Western Carolina scored two more insurance runs in the eighth to take the 8-4 victory.
Iona will spend next weekend down in Philadelphia taking on Saint Joseph’s next Friday and then single games against Villanova and Temple on Saturday and Sunday.
