Release: Wednesday 04/04/2012

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College lacrosse team dropped its first MAAC conference game of the season 12-7 over rivals Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field.

Iona (6-5, 0-1 MAAC) was led by four players with two points. Senior Emily Taddei, Junior Kylie Gregory and freshman Meghan Testoni each finished with two goals, while sophomore Brenna Lade scored and had an assist.  Senior Casey Scully and sophomore Angela Grous contributed with an assist.  Sophomore Maria Ortiz finished with 10 saves in the game.

The Gaels got off to a strong start and scored the first three goal of the game before the five minute mark. Gregory scored her first goal 38 seconds into regulation, followed by Taddei’s tally from Scully at 27:45 and then Testoni added the third marker at 25:40.

Fairfield (7-3, 2-0 MAAC) then scored the next six consecutive goals and turned the momentum in their favor. Iona scored with less than two minutes remaining to make it a two-goal differential at the half when Taddei scored from Grous.

The Stags dominated play early on in the second half and took a six goal lead, 11-5, with 15 minutes remaining.  Iona made a great effort with little time remaining scoring two of the final three goals.

Gregory scored with 14:48 remaining, but then neither team found the back of the net for the next 10 minutes until Fairfield scored an insurance goal with 3:50 left to make it 12-6. The hosts scored once more with 2:31 left, Testoni added her 14th of her rookie campaign.

Four Fairfield players finished with three points and were led by Chloe Mangan with a hat trick. Katie Keenan made eight saves and was victorious.

Iona will travel up north to face Niagara on Saturday at noon.
