Water Polo Picks Up Wins Over Marist, Siena
LOUDONVILLE, NY - The Iona College women's water polo team kept inself at the top of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings with a pair of wins Saturday morning†at Siena.† In game one, the Gaels avenged an earlier season loss to Marist with a 12-10 win over the Red Foxes before defeating the host Saints 13-8.
Against Marist, Iona was led by senior Cecilia Leonard's four goals, two assists and three kickouts drawn.† Sophomore Amy Olsen scored four times as well and contributed three steals and drew an astounding six kickouts.† Sophomore Erika Lauraitis had two goals and one steal while senior Mackenzie Mone and junior Alyssa Turza each had one goal and one steal in the win.† Sophomore Marisa Gaynor had 14 saves and two steals in net.
Against Siena, Lauraitis was the top scorer for the Gaels, scoring five times.† Turza and Mone each scored twice, with freshman Katie Stelnicki scoring two goals and picking up an impressive four steals.† Olsen had one goal and drew three kickouts.† Leonard finished her strong day with one goal, two assists and two kickouts drawn.† In three quarters of play, Gaynor had 10 saves while freshman Devin Green had one save in one quarter.
Iona is back in action next Saturday for a pair of MAAC contests at Villanova, beginning with a matchup with the host Wildcats at 10:00 am.
