NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College softball team improved to 11-3 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Sunday with a two-game sweep of Siena at Rice Oval. Iona held the Saints off the scoreboard for all 14 innings of play, taking game one 2-0 before winning game two 1-0.
Iona got the only offense it would need in game one in the second inning. With two outs, senior Allyssa James up the middle. Senior Chelsea Sheehan followed with a single down the right field line, putting runners on the corners. Freshman Brianna Schauer was up next, and delivered with a two-run double to left field to put Iona ahead 2-0.
Senior Sarah Jackson dominated the Saints in the circle, facing just 27 batters in seven innings of work. Jackson allowed three hits and two walks while striking out 12, her most in a conference game this season. It also marked the third consecutive season she has recorded double digit strikeouts in her start against Siena.
siena's Jessika-Jo Sandrini took the loss for Siena, dropping her record to 8-13. Sandrini allowed two runs, six hits and one walk in six innings.
Iona got the lone run of game two in the bottom of the first. Junior Jodi Petersen led off with an infield single. A sacrifice bunt by freshman Allison Hand moved Petersen to second before she advanced to third on a groundout to short. Senior Alyssa Maiese followed with a two-out single to left to put Iona ahead for good.
Maiese, the game two starter, was just as impressive as Jackson in game one, allowing just three hits to the Saints in game two, while striking out 10 batters, her fourth double digit strikeout performance of the season.
Iona is back in action Tuesday, when they host Fordham at Rice Oval at 3:00 pm.
