Head Coach Roni Rivera
“Our goal coming into this tournament was that we wanted to win. We made no exceptions, we wanted to win today and we played to win today, and sometimes you give everything and you fall short. I think our kids went for the win, they laid their hearts and souls out here and we lost. But that’s just life, and I could not be prouder of a group.”

BERKLEY, CA – A walk-off single in the bottom of the 13th inning by Amy Ekart eliminated the Iona College softball team, as Boston University took a 4-3 extra innings win in the 2012 NCAA Division 1 Softball Regionals at Levine-Fricke Field on Saturday evening.

In what was a dramatic game on both ends, the Gaels battled back twice before taking a one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth, but the Terriers tied the game on a two-out error continuing the extra innings marathon.

Junior Jodi Petersen finished with a pair of hits, tying the Iona College single-season hits record with 60. In the fifth inning, Petersen tied the game on an RBI single to left field but then Boston took the lead once again in the bottom of the inning.

Three singles in the Iona sixth by Seniors Alyssa Maiese, Allyssa James and Junior Eileen McCann set-up a bases loaded situation that resulted with the Gaels scoring on a wild pitch to re-tie the game at two.

Iona struck in the ninth as Maiese picked up her second of three hits in the game on a single to short, driving in Peterson for what was then the go-ahead run.

Maiese threw a no-decision gem for her final performance as a Gael. Maiese lasted 8.2 innings and allowed two earned runs while fanning 10 batters. Teammate Sarah Jackson also ended her career with the Maroon & Gold, pitching the final four innings and allowed the game-winning run in the 13th.

Boston countered Iona’s aces with Holli Floetker and Whitney Tuthill inside the circle.  Floetker pitched six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits and Tuthill pitched the remaining seven innings for the win after surrendering one run in the Iona ninth.
