JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Iona College baseball team completed its 2012 campaign with a 4-2 win at Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Jaroschak Field. Senior LHP Justin Wiley finished his Iona career with a complete game effort scattering 10 hits and striking out six batters in the win.
The Gaels took a 2-0 lead with single tallies in the second and third innings. Sophomore RF Joe Smith singled home junior SS Matthew Kriss with two outs in the top of the second to put the Maroon & Gold on the scoreboard. An inning later, Kriss drove in senior 3B Chris Burke with an RBI sacrifice fly.
The Peacocks cut their deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the third. In the sixth for Iona, senior James Beck picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly of his own as Kriss scored his second run of the contest.
Iona added its final run in the top of the seventh inning. Kriss again came through with an RBI single to plate senior 2B Eric Capowski.
Saint Peter's scored a run in bottom of the seventh to round out their scoring. Burke, Kriss and senior C James Beck each had two hits in the win.
Wiley earned his 13th victory at Iona with the complete game effort. It was also his 13th career complete game, extending his modern day Iona record (post-1985) in the statistic.
The Gaels finished the regular season with a 10-14 MAAC mark good for sixth place in the standings, the first time with double-digit wins for the program since the 2004 capaign. Iona's 21 overall wins are also the most since 2004.
