Release: Monday 08/20/2012
NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team earned a place on the initial offering of the Tournament 48 National Ranking, placing 40th, while junior midfielder Franklin Castellanos has been named to the College Soccer News Preseason All-American Team.

The Tournament 48 National Ranking is a one-of-a-kind effort to rank the top men’s college soccer teams and also project the post-season NCAA Tournament field, including all of the automatic qualifiers from 22 eligible Division I conferences. The ranking is updated every Monday morning throughout the season.  North Carolina, the defending NCAA Champions, open the season ranked number one.

Named a Third Team Preseason All-American, Castellanos appeared in 19 games last season for the Maroon & Gold, leading the Gaels in points with 20 points (3g, 14a).  His 14 assists were the most in the country as were his 0.74 assists per game average while earning All-MAAC and NSCAA All-North Atlantic First Team First Team honors.  This season, he has been named Preseason Co-MAAC Player of the Year and earned a spot on the MAC Hermann Award Watch List, the highest individual honor given in collegiate soccer.

The Gaels open the season this Friday, Aug. 24, when they travel to Garden City, NY to take on Adelphi.
