JAMAICA, NY - Sophomore guards Aleesha Powell and Damika Martinez combined for 24 points, but it wasn't enough as the Iona College women's basketball team dropped a Wednesday afternoon matinee to St. John's 77-51 at Carnesecca Arena.
Early on the Gaels took a quick lead at 4-3 after a jumper by junior center Sabrina Jeridore with 18:25 remaining. St. John's answered back with a jumper by Nadriah McKenith that started a 22-7 run, and gave the Red Storm a 27-11 lead with 6:51 remaining.
Martinez would knotch her first points of the contest from the line and helped the Gaels start an 11-0 run of their own, capped by a three-pointer by freshman guard Aaliyah Robinson and free throws by senior guard Haley D'Angelo, to pull within five at 27-22 with 1:20 remaining in the first half. A three-pointer by Briana Brown stopped the run as St. John's took a 30-22 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the teams traded points early on, with the Red Storm going ahead by as much as 12 and the Gaels getting as close as seven. After a layup by Jeridore cut the St. John's lead to 41-34, the Red Storm went on a 11-2 run to take a 16 point lead.
Martinez knocked down a jumper and then connected on a three-pointer on the next trip down the court to get within 11 at 51-41, before the Red Storm went on a 9-0 run to put the game away for good.
Shenneika Smith had a game high 21 points for St. John's, to go along with eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. McKenith finished with 17 points while Brown chipped in 15 for the 3-1 Red Storm.
Powell finished the game with three rebounds and two steals, while Martinez contributed three steals and two blocks in the contest. Freshman forward Joy Adams had a game high nine rebounds for the Gaels, who look to snap their three game slide next Wednesday at Providence, with tipoff scheduled for 12:00 pm.
